Rice University-Leadership Academy Nepal (Rice-LAN) Blended Programs

Rice-LAN partnership aims to provide quality learning and development through innovative education, training and programming, focused on using the most modern technologies, pedagogy and top tier education resources, to accelerate the development of qualified human capital in Nepal and the South Asia region.

While human resources development challenges are significant, Nepal also offers exceptional opportunities to explore and implement innovative solutions. There is a growing demand for effective teaching and training programs that will help to attract and retain competent talent in enterprises that are aspiring for continued growth in an increasingly competitive environment.

Key Objective and Outcomes

The Rice-LAN initiative is designed to prepare suitably qualified and socially responsible business leaders in Nepal and the South Asia region. The focus will be on engendering contemplative leaders with strong core values and ethical standards, by inculcating essential knowledge and skills required to make significant contributions within their enterprises as well as in their communities, region and national economy.

Blended Program Focus and Benefits

The topics that will be initially offered are in the areas of (a) Business Strategy, (b) Leadership, and (c) Business Analytics. Other areas such as Business Operations, Communications, Personal Development will be added in the near future.  While some content and theories related to these topics might have been covered in standard Bachelors and Masters in Business programs, the thrust of these courses are very different: they are designed to help professionals (and aspiring professionals) acquire highly useful and practical frameworks and tools to deploy in their enterprises and functional areas to identify, develop and implement their strategies, become more effective analyzers of business information and data, and reflect on their leadership qualities and ways to build effective teams and productive organizations.

The courses will be taught by highly qualified faculty who have extensive experience and exposure in the private sector coupled with academic rigor.  While such executive education is routinely used by enterprises in developed countries and are increasingly common in corporations in large economies such as India or China, they are not as common yet in Nepal.  Rice-LAN partnership hopes to change that by providing world class executive education platform to transform enterprises right here in Nepal.  Participants receive Rice University certificates for successfully completing their courses and programs.

Program Pedagogy

The Blended Program brings together live synchronous sessions with Rice faculty (from Houston, Texas, USA), asynchronous content, as well as support by local facilitators. Together the delivery package is design for maximum learning with maximum flexibility for the working participants.

Two tracks will be offered: (a) Manager Tracks for those already with responsible roles and managing teams within their units and departments (possibly manager level employees); and (b) Foundational Track for those younger professionals and emerging leaders (possibly junior managers/officer) who are likely to soon take up manager roles.

The program will also include some outstanding aspiring students with less work experience to provide more variety of experiences and peer to peer learning.  The courses will be delivered by full time renowned Rice University faculty who have the theoretical knowledge but also extensive work experience in the private sector. The following provides summary of the pedagogical approach that will be used:

  1. Viewing of relevant video content (posted online)
  2. Reading of relevant textbook and journal articles (posted online)
  3. Readings, discussion, and responses on real case studies (online and real time streaming)
  4. Weekly live streaming classroom exchanges with Rice faculty (1.5-2 hours) (real time streaming)
  5. Weekly face to face discussion with peers and local facilitators (3 hours) (on site face to face)
  6. Assessments as required for the course (end of each course)

For summary descriptions of the 3 courses being offered initially (each course will be of one month duration)), kindly review Annex 1 below.

The lectures will progress with a focus on managing oneself, others, and teams.

Topics will either directly or indirectly include:

  1. Leadership Styles
  2. Person-Culture Fit
  3. Understanding Individual Differences
  4. Employee Engagement
  5. Characteristics of Derailed Managers

The purpose of these lectures is to give participants a working knowledge of the ‘Linear Regression’ procedure which is a widely used statistical technique in the industry for purposes of predictive analytics, making informed (data backed) business decisions, optimizing business processes and gaining new insights from data.

The topic would be introduced and applied to various application settings. We will walk through the entire process of discerning a ‘need’ for such a procedure to the ‘nuts and bolts’ of applying it and then ‘managerially interpreting’ the results to gain business insights.

At the end of the course participants should be comfortable in applying these techniques in their business environments.
